Harry’s Shave Club Review
Just like you, I was sick and tired of going to the supermarket or drug store and staring at $35 or more for razors. It just didn’t make sense. Hell, it still doesn’t.
But that’s from a time long, long ago, before there were options.
Now, one of the options is Harry’s Shave Club, which I’ve used for more than a year and a half. Keep reading to see what I think, learn about the different offerings, and decide if you should try it.
Harry’s Shaving Review
Overall, it’s good. I wouldn’t say it’s not the best razor I’ve ever used in my life, but it’s much better than disposables. There are definitely pluses and minuses, as with anything.
Pros:
- Sturdy handle
- Cool color selections
- To go cover works well (and lets the razor breath so they can dry)
- Razors work well
- Convenient
Cons:
- Razors rust pretty quickly
- Not sure how much money I’m actually saving
At the end of the day, let’s be honest. There’s nothing worse than buying those razors in the store. The Dollar Shave Club ads were right. They’re behind some locked window and the sticker shock from the price is probably one of the contributing factors to the Rise of the Beard.
But at the end of the day, I think the Gillette razors were a higher quality and lasted longer. That’s why I’m not sure how much money I’m actually saving. The Harry’s razors, while definitely better than disposables, are not quite as strong as Gillette’s. And, when I break it down, I think I end up paying the same or even a little more for Harry’s.
The difference, of course, is that I don’t have to shop for Harry’s. I don’t have to retrieve some pimple-faced teenager to unlock the razors so I can spend $35 for eight razors. Harry’s is delivered every three months and even fits into my apartment complex’s mailbox, so they don’t just leave it on the ground.
What Is Harry’s Shave Club?
Harry’s is a shaving subscription service where you choose how often you want to receive a shipment of razors based on how often you shave. The starter kit is delivered shortly thereafter, and then you receive shipments on your designed recurring schedule.
Of course, you can change your plan or cancel at any time, but once you start getting the deliveries and you no longer need to worry about buying razors, it’s hard to quit.
What Comes in Your First Box?
In your starter set you get “everything you need for a great shave”. This includes a rubberized handle that comes in three colors orange, navy blue, or forest green. Recently, they’ve added an a fourth option, a sleek chrome, but that costs $10 more.
You also get your first, five-blade razor cartridge, foaming shave gel (2 ounces), and a travel blade cover.
When I was looking at it recently for this review, the Starter Set costs $8, discounted from the original $13 with free shipping. But I’m pretty sure I went through some ad where it only cost me five. But, to be honest, I can’t remember now. And eight bucks isn’t bad to start.
Different Harry’s Shaving Plans
After you get your starter kit, you choose what you want to come on every refill with the first one shipped about two and a half weeks after your first order (the Starter Set ships right away). The different refill plans are:
- 8 razor cartridges
- 8 razor cartridges and 1 Foaming have Gel
- Family Plan: 16 razor cartridges and 2 Foaming Shave Gels
The costs for each option are $15, $21, and $35 respectively.
Next, you choose how frequently your refills are delivered based around how often you shave. The options are:
- Every 2 months (based on shaving 5-7 days per week)
- Every 3 months (based on shaving 2-4 days per week)
- Every 5 months (based on shaving 1 day a week or less)
I’m signed up for the 8 razor cartridges delivered every three months and I’ve never come close to running out of razors. So, unless you’re a hairy mo-fo that shaves every day (or twice a day like someone I used to work with), I’d recommend that plan. Plus, you can always change it if you’re running out of razors.
Harry’s Shaving Cream Review
The Foaming Shave Gel that came in my starter pack wasn’t bad. But at only 2 ounces it didn’t last long. The one that comes in your subscription plan is 6.7 ounces, which makes more sense and would last longer, but I’m not sure it would last the two or three months between subscriptions.
Plus, I’m a man of routine and habit and I’ve been using Edge shaving cream forever. It’s easy to grab a two-pack in the supermarket every six months or so and not have to think about it. If you’re on a subscription plan that includes shaving cream and you run out of shaving cream and have to pick some up at the store, it seems to me to defeat the whole purpose.
But, what do I know?
Other Harry’s Products
In order to diversify their revenue streams, Harry’s has released different products over the last couple years to all aspects of men’s grooming. Some of these other products are:
- Razor Stand – $15
- Post-Shave Balm – $8
- Post-Shave Mist – $12
- Face Wash – $7
- Face Lotion – $8
- Bar Soap Variety Pack – $12
- Body Wash Variety Pack – $19.50
- Toiletry Bag – $20
- “Sleepy Jones” Boxers – $20
I have not tried, and, to be perfectly honest, probably won’t try (because I’m cheap and stubborn and I have some other brand’s versions of all of those things already), any of these products so I can’t speak for or against them. If you have, throw a comment below to help everyone out.
Overall Grade for Harry’s Shave Club
While I can’t sit here and say I’m blown away by Harry’s, and that might not be the resounding review you were looking for, I can say that I’ve been a member for well over a year and haven’t canceled. The convenience is too much to pass up and makes up for any small difference I may be paying.
Overall Grade for Harry’s: 7
I will say, over the next couple months I will be trying Gillette’s new subscription service and Dollar Shave Club just to see which is my favorite. I’ll post those reviews as I use them, so be on the lookout. Hopefully by the end of all these trials I’ll be able to give a stronger stamp of approval on one of them.
Don’t forget to post a comment below if you’ve used Harry’s or any of the other subscription services.
